Before rolling into plates, coils and long sections, steel slabs and billets manufactured by continuous casting machines are heated to 1250 *C in reheating furnaces in a slightly oxidised atmosphere. This results into thick primary scales and very sticky secondary scale on the surfaces of steel slabs or billets. Before rolling into mills under load that sometimes exceeds 4000 MT, this scale is removed by high pressure water jets from pressure ranging from 160 bar to 250 bar in different passes. The water is supplied by continuously running high pressure high volume centrifugal pumps. Despite installing scale pits and filtration systems, descaling water contain significant amount of solids and abrasive iron oxide particles. Also high frequency of operations from minimum to maximum flow and vice versa results into frequent rotor shifts and axial loads on the balancing disc. Designs of our pumps are very sturdy and at many steel plants, the running life has exceeded 20 years.  These pumps are driven by suitable electrical motor. The power is transmitted by a state of the art dry type plate membrane coupling.
